5 Simple Ingredients!

All you need for this recipe is flour, cornmeal, salt, pepper, and your favorite cajun seasoning. The recipe makes 2 3/4 cups of Fish Fry. You can double it up if you like and keep it in an airtight container. That’s what I like to do.

How Do I Use Best Fish Fry Breading Recipe?

I keep calling it “fish fry” but she calls it “Fish Flour” in her cookbook. All I know for sure is, it is the BEST Fish Fry Breading Recipe I have ever tried!

Anyway, now that you’ve got your fish fry all mixed up you might like to know exactly how to use it. Use it just the same way you would use Louisiana brand Fish Fry. With one secret ingredient that will send your fried fish OVER, THE, TOP!

Louisiana Fish Fry package directions say to dip your fish in water and then in the dry flour mixture. Then fry as normal.

Are you ready for my secret ingredient?

Yellow mustard!

Yep. Yellow mustard! Add about 1/4 cup yellow mustard to your dipping water and mix it up well.

After you dip the fish in the mustard water and then the fish flour, you will want to fry your fish in oil that is at least 350°. Keep your oil temp between 350°-375°.

I actually don’t use a thermometer but all the “experts” say that’s the desired temperature for frying fish. My burner is set to medium and I test the heat by adding a pinch of fish fry to the oil. If it bubbles, it’s ready for my fish. This is what it will look like when you add a pinch of fish flour to oil that is ready to go.

What type of oil is best to use when frying fish?

So here’s the deal, there is not really a “best” oil for frying fish. However, you DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT, want to use olive oil!! Olive oil has a very strong flavor and it will definitely affect the taste of the fish.

A mild tasting high heat oil is perfect. Vegetable oil, canola oil, or peanut oil is fantastic. And depending on your taste, coconut oil is a great option!! We love to use coconut oil for fried fish. The flavor is INSANE!

In my opinion, coconut oil is the best oil for deep frying fish!

A Few Tips to Ensure Success!

PRO TIP: If your cooking oil isn’t hot enough the breading will be soggy and your fish will absorb a ton of oil. Gag! On the other hand, if the oil is too hot, the breading will burn. No Bueno!

Fry up 4-5 equal-sized pieces of fish until golden brown. Turning only once.

BONUS PRO TIP:

Let the oil drain off on a cooling rack.

Would you just take a moment and look at that perfectly crisp golden goodness.

Some folks like to drain their fried fish on paper towels, dish towels, or paper bags. These will work to absorb oil but when you put hot fish on a towel, moisture tends to build between the fish and the towel. When that moisture builds it makes the breading soggy.

Draining on a cooling rack allows for airflow preventing the build-up of moisture.

You didn’t go through all the trouble to perfectly fry your fresh fish, just to have the finished product ruined in the last few moments before it touches your mouth.

No. You did all this to sink your teeth into a crispy golden brown flakey succulent fish nugget.

My mouth is watering.

I can’t wait to try this recipe! I’ve been searching for a while today and this recipe appears to be exactly what I’m looking for! It has the same ingredients that we already use…except WITH MEASUREMENTS! Sometimes ours would not have enough seasoning and other times it would have too much. So glad to find this!! We wanted a DRY MIX and not a batter…which was what kept coming up in my searches until I got the wording right and started to find DRY mixes…Thank You !!
