Life and Home Storage and Bin items

Light Covers & fixtures

This first how-to comes from Jillee and her blog, One good thing. I’ll tell you what Jillee has more than ONE good thing! I have enjoyed her blog for quite a while ♥.

Here is her detailed how-to on cleaning light fixtures! Enjoy. 🙂

Under Stove

Next up on the list is Christine from I dream of clean. Cleaning under your stove without having to move it?! Duh! Why didn’t I think of that?! Check out her quick cleaning tip here.

Under Refrigerator

This money-saving spring cleaning tip comes once again from Jillee. I told you she has more than one good thing!

Cleaning under the refrigerator is something I do every month. We have two dogs and things get hairy.

Under Washer & Dryer

I’m just going to be straight with you, this task sucks! It takes a while and there are a lot of steps involved. However, it could be a matter of life and death so just do it.

These cumbersome tasks are why I created this 30-day, 30-task spring cleaning checklist. Thirty tasks in thirty days and you’re done! Spring cleaning is so much easier this way!

Cleaning under the washer and dryer is important because if not maintained they can become hazardous. Especially the dryer. The National Fire Protection Association has some excellent tips on staying safe.

Melissa Maker from CleanMySpace.comCleanMySpace.com has a fantastic and thorough how-to article on cleaning your washer and dryer!

Kitchen Cabinets

Here is an all-natural way to degrease kitchen cabinets from inspiringsavings.com! I love this! I’m all about saving money and using homemade all-natural cleaners that actually work! My favorite DIY all-purpose cleaner uses Dr. Bronner’s castile soap and works GREAT on grease! Plus it has natural disinfecting properties and smells amazing.

Organize Bathroom Cabinets

Aren’t bathroom cabinets not one of the most difficult to keep organized? I finally found a solution that works for me. I bought a few of these plastic drawer sets in different sizes.

Printable Spring Cleaning Checklist

My label maker came in handy as well. The people in my household are actually putting things back where they belong! And, they can find what they need without my help.

Here is a great post from Lela Burris on organizing bathrooms!

I absolutely LOVE Lela’s tips and beautiful organization. How about those clear acrylic dividers?! I am with Lela on this…dividers are a must for organization! Lela, I am having a serious case of drawer envy right now!

Hello, beautifully organized bathroom countertop! Swoon!

There is something so satisfying about this! Am I weird? An organized drawer or cabinet or countertop makes me so happy! And by the way, Lela reminds us that you don’t have to spend a fortune to have pretty organization. 🙂 Thank you, Lela!

Even if you have your bathroom in order, do yourself a favor and enjoy the read and her beautiful photos like the teasers above!

Baseboards

Ugh! The dust that accumulates on baseboards is just plain annoying. Nothing more really to say about it.

Want to learn how to keep them clean for longer?! Click here and find out from Angie at thecountrychiccottage.com just how to do that!

Tops of Doors & Door Frames

A highly overlooked area of the home. For obvious reasons, most of us just aren’t tall enough to see the dust and grime that accumulates up there. It’s pretty amazing where you’ll find dust!

This is the fastest task on the list. A wet cloth is really all you need. You could use a little dusting spray to help keep them cleaner for longer if you like.

Window Tracks

Ah yes, window tracks. A real pain in the, you know what. Jennifer at theintentionalmom.com has a quick and easy way to get this absurdly tedious job done with much less gluteus maximus pain! Check it out!

Curtains & Drapes

Cleaning curtains, one of my favorite spring cleaning tasks. I know it sounds weird, but just hear me out.

Curtains, drapes, throw pillows, throws, blankets, etc. (anything fabric) tend to hold on to every odor you can imagine. Cooking odors and pet odors are by far the worst. GAG! I can’t stand stank! And I know I’m not alone.

After all the fabric of our lives has been freshly cleaned the house smells so good! I just love it! Katie Berry (Katie Berry NOT Katie Perry!) from housewifehowtos.com published a most excellent post on how to clean every type of curtain known to man.

Read it here, and find out how to clean…wait for it…BEADED CURTAINS! Yes, even beaded curtains should be cleaned occasionally.

Floor Vents

Okay, this is a good one! I don’t know why I never thought to do this myself. Here is a great tip from Toni over at designdazzle.com!

Don’t forget to vacuum out those vents as well! You’ll see when you lift those vents out of the floor.

Interior Windows

If you have a ton of windows in your home, a squeegee makes crazy quick work of cleaning them!

I love this squeegee! I personally like the idea of cleaning tools looking nice.

Don’t forget the window cleaner! You can find my homemade streak-free glass cleaner recipe here! It smells amazing! Gotta love essential oils!

I learned this squeegee tip from Martha Stewart years ago. Guess I never thought of using one in my home, I thought squeegees were only for skyscrapers.

Spray your windows with glass cleaner. Use a cleaning rag to get any tough dog slobber spots or any other grime you may have on your windows. Then use the squeegee to remove the cleaner. Use a clean cloth to catch any drips. Done!

Exterior Windows

Come spring those outside windows are more than ready for a good cleaning! Head on over to frugallyblonde.com to read about an easy fast way to get this job done. Thank you so much, Julie, for sharing such a great post!

Top of Refrigerator

I think there is probably always a better way to do most things. I know after 39 years on this planet I have learned new ways of doing things. Almost on a daily basis. There are constantly new products being developed that make our lives easier.

You just never know what you’ll find out there. 🙂 I really don’t like cleaning the top of the fridge. So much so that I am considering putting newspaper or wax paper down after this next cleaning. That way I will NEVER have to clean it again! Anything that might make this task easier or faster, I’m down for it!

Check out this post from Ask Anna! Anna has some really great tips on all kinds of cleaning tasks!

Vent Hood

You know that thing that is over the top of your stove. It sucks out all the smoke while you’re burning your food. Ha! Very rarely do I use the fan. However, on occasion, it has been necessary. I digress.

The vent hood should be cleaned regularly. Usually about once a month I give it a good wipe down and clean the filter. I don’t like to let it go too long so it takes a matter of minutes to clean it.

Printable Spring Cleaning Checklist

Yep! It’s past time I’d say. I guess I haven’t looked under there lately.

Alea, from premeditatedleftovers.com, has a great method for cleaning your vent hood. If you’ve let it go too long check out her post here!

Window Frames

Dust will settle on any and every surface. My window frames stick out only about 1/4 inch, but let me tell you that’s all the space dust needs to find a home. OY! Take a wet rag and wipe down all window frame tops. This one is done lickety-split!

Ceiling Fans

Okay, we’re more than halfway through the list. Stay with me! When you’re all done your home will feel light and airy. It will smell fabulous! And you’ll be all set for spring.

In my house, the ceiling fans are a constant battle. Two dogs and a wood-burning stove create a never-ending blanket of dust!

That is my Swiffer extendable dusting wand! With a reusable duster head!!! HUGE money saver! LOVE them!

Carrie, from onecrazymom.com, shares a number of techniques to get your ceiling fan nice and clean. Also, ways to keep it clean longer! I will be most definitely using a few of these ideas!!

Nic Nacs & Decor

Here we go with dust and grime again. At this point, you may be sick of cleaning. Not many of us actually want to clean much less enjoy it.

For this task, I usually fill the sink with hot water and a little dr. Bronners castile soap. A little dab will do ya!

I use a washcloth to give each item a good wipe down. For some of the really tough stuff, like kitchen Nic Nacs on top of cabinets that greasy, I bring it straight to the sink.

Closets

This may be a task that you have already done. If you have the mindset, a place for everything and everything in its place, this should only have to be done once…EVER!

When it’s all said and done, be sure to put things back where they belong. That way it’s one and done.

This is my hallway broom closet. It looks exactly like this all the time.

A place for everything, and everything in its place. Click To Tweet

Start by taking everything out. Get rid of anything you don’t use or want. Lastly, reorganize everything you are keeping.

Kitchen Drawers – NO MORE JUNK DRAWER!

Once again Lela Burris to the rescue!

Yeah, I am an EX “junk drawer” person so I don’t have any junk drawer pics to share. Frankly, I always LOATHED this drawer in my kitchen. I have no idea why I didn’t get rid of it sooner. An absolute waste of valuable space. I could never find anything in there! Mine looked much like Lela’s…

It seemed convenient at the time. Just throw random crap in that I otherwise had been too lazy to find a specific place for no idea what to do with. Take a look at Lela’s after pic!

Do yourself a favor and get rid of it. Make specific use of this drawer. Organize it! Let Lela help you, she has some great ideas!

Prune & Fertilize Houseplants

Don’t forget to care for your air cleaners! Trim off any dead and dying foliage. Fertilize them, believe it or not, they need a little food now and then. 🙂 They will thank you, by continuing to improve your indoor air quality. ♥

Clean Dishwasher

Cleaning your cleaning machines may be one of the most overlooked of spring cleaning tasks. If my dishwasher is dirty are my dishes really getting clean and sanitized? Or if my vacuum is dirty am I not just moving dirt around versus actually cleaning it?

Not to mention these machines are not cheap. Keeping them in tip-top shape will save you money and heartache in the long run!

Crystal from mommythrives.com has a great post for cleaning and regular cleaning maintenance! Check it out here!

Clean Refrigerator

After all, it does store your food.

Corrie at centsablemomma.com has a great vinegar and baking soda trick! Go ahead and give the refrigerator a deep clean!

Clean Trash Cans

Often neglected by yours truly.

If it’s a nice warm spring day this is a great spring cleaning task to take outside! Get the kids involved! Spray the trash can with the hose. Grab your favorite homemade cleaner, baking soda, and vinegar, or dish soap and give your trash can a good scrub!

Rinse and air dry outside in the sun for about 10-15 minutes. They dry really fast especially if the sun is out and the sun’s rays help with any residual odors!

Purge Old Makeup & Nail Polish

Nail polish! We have a bunch in our house. I have three girls. If it weren’t for a slight lack of storage space, we would have more!

It may be time to organize these. Any ideas? Leave me a comment, I’d love to hear your nail polish organizing tips!

3/22/2020 UPDATE: I found these awesome nail polish organizers on Amazon!!

Also if you’re into doing your own nails, check out my dip powder nails product review!

It’s my new favorite way to do my nails! I can still use all my regular nail polish colors too!

Anyway

Nail polish should only be tossed if it’s dried up, thick and gloopy, or just otherwise unusable.

Makeup I believe is another neglected area as far as getting rid of the old stuff. Mascara should be replaced every 3 months or so.

How many of us have dropped a new blush or eyeshadow and immediately tossed it out? You can make a DIY lip gloss instead! Mix it with coconut oil and beeswax, pour it into a container of your choice and, voila!

It makes me want to break one on purpose just so I can make some! Wouldn’t these make great little gifts? If you happen to have been reading this while applying your makeup and dropped an eyeshadow, here is everything you need!

Vacuum Under Beds

Maybe skip this one if you don’t want to move all the beds. After all, I’m not He-man. Or if your vacuum is as awesome as mine it will swivel and slide under MOST ANYTHING! And pick up pet hair like nothing you’ve EVER seen! It is truly remarkable! On top of having all-around great products, Shark customer service is second to none.

A while back I had a hole in the rotator head hose. I called the company and they sent out a whole new head no questions asked!

I absolutely adore my shark vacuum and steam mop!!

Vacuum Under Furniture

Unfortunately, my awesome shark vacuum won’t fit under my couch. Ugh! Gonna have to move that sucker.

Clean Vacuum Cleaner

You shall become a vacuum cleaner.

Get it? It’s a vacuum cleaner, you’re going to clean it. Making you a vacuum cleaner!

Ha!

Never mind.

Can I just say again, Shark makes the best vacuums EVER!

Here is yet another GOOD Thing by Jillee. Boy, do we love her! She shares some outstanding tips for cleaning and maintaining your vacuum!

Clean Light Switch & Receptacle Covers

LAST ONE! Whoot!

Most of these tasks are pretty self-explanatory. I don’t want you to think you have to do anything crazy here with this task. Using your new FREE Lemon Verbena Mrs. Meyers multi-surface cleaner and a cleaning rag, spray cleaner on the rag and wipe them all down.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy! Click To Tweet
